CHARACTER
NAME: Fenris
CANON: Dragon Age
CANON POINT: Post Dragon Age 2 / during Inquisition, prior to Adamant
AGE: mid 30s (no canon age given)
BACKGROUND: Dragon Age Wiki

PERSONALITY:

As an escaped slave, Fenris' life has been anything but easy. The trauma of receiving the markings that give him his powerful abilities entirely erased his memories of his childhood and early life before his family had been enslaved. Mentally and physically scarred by the experience, this event and the abuses he was both subjected to and witnessed as a slave of a powerful, ruling-class mage in Tevinter are the main themes that inform much of his worldview.

Nicknamed "Broody" by another companion (Varric) in DA2 for his often pensive nature, Fenris is prone to (often justifiable) paranoia and anxiety during most of the story, having to be constantly vigilant against recapture. He is suspicious of people by default and extremely slow to trust, and as such has difficulty making lasting and meaningful connections with people. In particular, he is extremely wary and distrustful of all mages, believing that given the opportunity and with the right motivation, all will eventually succumb to an insatiable lust for more and more power that will lead them to harming innocent and weaker people around them. Anyone who shows mercy or sympathy for mages, who makes deals with slavers, or shows admiration for Tevinter risks his temper and being subject to reviling words. Slavers themselves are shown no mercy.

Trust is the single most important thing to Fenris. Like most people, he has varying levels of how much of it he allocates to people, and it can be extremely difficult to earn. People who respect his boundaries (physically, mentally, emotionally) and aren't dismissive of his experiences will find it easier than those who force themselves and their ideals upon him.

Yet despite being so subjugated for much of his life, Fenris is extremely intelligent. Although never permitted to read as a slave, he constantly demonstrates knowledge on a variety of subjects (particularly Qunari and Tevinter culture), and his manner of speech is thoughtful and elevated for his background. Much of this is owed to the fact that he is very observant of people and situations, a survival tactic that has served him well.

Even so, Fenris struggles with his own emotional intelligence. Interpreting his own feelings when it comes to things like friendship and love is extremely difficult because he was unable (and perhaps not even permitted) to form any attachments to anyone outside of Danarius for much of his life. He can be awkward with bare-faced affection aimed at him, whether it's platonic compliments and appreciation or actual flirtation, particularly if it comes from someone he might also be interested in.

But one of his most striking qualities is his passion. He is ferocious when defending his points of view, especially when a challenge comes with a dismissal of his trauma of being used as an experiment, weapon, and slave. When his trust is earned, he is an extremely faithful and loyal companion even if he disagrees with Hawke's decisions, to the point of fighting alongside them even if they are pro-mage. If romanced, his expressions of love are powerful and meaningful, both in words (proclaiming "I am yours" as an ex-slave demonstrates an extreme level of devotion freely given) and symbolically (painting the Amell family crest onto his armor in addition to the red favor worn on his wrist). Additionally, he can be somewhat possessive of his love interest, responding crankily to someone who might try to flirt with them in front of him.

Fenris is full of contradictions - he expresses sympathy for the oppressed and abused, but even when shown the suffering of mages innocent of any actual wrongdoing (other than being mages) at the Circle, he is cold and callous towards their suffering. He can be quick to have a temper, but just as quick to apologize when he recognizes that his actions or words were in the wrong. Even though he can often be awkward on the receiving end of compliments and flirtations, he clearly has no problem delivering a few smooth lines of his own. Perhaps most importantly: despite his reputation for brooding, there are many times where he demonstrates a rather dry sense of humor, and can even be playful on occasion. Despite the fact that he was deliberately transformed into a fearsome killer, Fenris has great capacity for gentleness and warmth. But because of everything that he has been through, it takes a great deal of effort and trust in order for him to be comfortable enough to push back the prickly, harder outer layers and show his vulnerability.

Fenris' character growth is affected greatly by other characters in Dragon Age 2 rather than events. As mentioned earlier, he often has difficulty both understanding how and allowing himself to develop friendship and emotional intimacy with others. But over the course of the story, he demonstrates a capacity for understanding and accepting people on an individual level even when their ideals are at odds so long as he feels there is a mutual acceptance - or at least acknowledgement - of his own. He develops several friendships with other companions and characters outside of Hawke as he's brought along for quests. His own personal quests are extremely emotionally charged and when we see him at his most vulnerable, taking risks when asking for help ("Come with me / It would mean a lot to me"), and when romanced he learns how to be unafraid of what he wants. But much of this is accomplished because of the initial relationship that Fenris builds with Hawke - it serves as a foundation for his ability to understand what it means to have a real friend.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

What look like white tattoos are actually lines of Lyrium burned directly into his skin. Although not a mage himself, it gives him unique abilities, such as being able to phase parts of his body through solid objects. His signature move is to reach into the chest of his enemy and rip out their heart. They can also enhance his already formidable physical strength.

The markings still cause him constant physical pain, and can still be sensitive to touch.

INVENTORY:

Blade of Mercy (longsword / greatsword)
His Armor
A red cloth favor sometimes worn around the wrist
Book of Shartan

MOONBLESSING: Iris
